Are Atomic Web Designers the Next Big Thing?


atomic web designModular design always seems like a great idea. Sometimes it works. Sometimes, as was the case with modular cell phones, it’s a disaster.

But what about modular web design? What if you could build a website from a few basic building blocks and keep reusing those major “modules” over again?

What could you do better or more efficiently if this were the case?

Fortunately, a new trend in web design is on the rise. And it looks a lot like modular web design.

Let’s dig in and see what it’s all about.

1. What Exactly Is Atomic Design?

Basically, atomic design is all in your head. It’s a made up hierarchy of reusable components. But, it’s a useful construct.

There are five stages of this logical interface design system: atoms, molecules, organisms, templates, and pages.

Atoms

Atoms are the building blocks of your website. They’re the smallest HTML elements.

Buttons, labels, input fields and other small HTML elements are all apart of the atoms category. You can’t include larger HTML elements, even if they seem small.

And, HTML comes with a cousin. CSS style rules like fonts, colors, and dimensions are also within the atoms classification.

The idea behind atomic design is bottom-up design. You start with the atoms and work your way up.

Molecules

Molecules are made up of…you guessed it! Atoms!

Molecules are the reason atoms exist in atomic design. They give each atom an overall design or purpose.

There is a logic to each molecule. They must work well together. Otherwise, the design is utterly unusable.

Take a title and the author’s byline from a blog as an example. The one without the other won’t do.

The author’s byline isn’t useful except with blog titles. You can’t use it on a sales page or a contact page.

These two atoms must be used as a molecule. You will format each the same throughout the whole blog, so why not keep those HTML codes together in all instances?

Organisms

Kingdom, phylum, class, order, family, genus, species… I memorized this in high school Advanced Biology and it’s never left my mind. But atomic web design organisms are different than us carbon-based ones.

These organisms are made from web design “molecules.”

Organisms are essentially much larger sections of code. If we take an example molecule from earlier — a title and a byline — and then combine it with another molecule — the top image placeholder and the meta-tag placeholder — you have a reusable organism.

Now, organisms look like molecules and molecules look like organisms. And really, the two definitions are fuzzy.

But the point is they’re reusable pieces you can match with other reusable pieces. Organisms are just less flexible than molecules.

Templates

“One of these things is not like the others…” But wait, weren’t we talking about chemistry and biology?

It seems that the creator thought the science metaphor had gone too far. I mean, ecosystem or biome would have worked…but whatever.

Templates are the page level structure without the final content. You’ve selected all of your organisms and placed them in order.

You now have a blog page template where you simply plug in the content. And, it gives the designer a peek at how the molecules and organisms fit together.

They can re-arrange before getting to the final stage.

Pages

This is the final test. It’s where the user interface gets fine-tuned.

The step between templates and pages is nothing like the step between organisms and templates.

The template is a culmination of every part that came before. But, a page is the marriage of content with the template.

The great thing about atomic design pages? They’re not permanent. You can go back and change an atom out or a molecule or a whole organism if it doesn’t fit.

This is the ultimate in modular web design.

2. But Why Should I Use It?

I’m no web designer. But from the little I know about HTML, it seems that a modular, reusable system would make all steps to building a website from scratch faster.

And what I’ve researched tells me this is true.

Consistency in Code

Here’s the thing about computer languages: They’re never concrete. One coder does it one way, another thinks that’s disorganized idiocy and does it another way.

There is no consistency from one person to another. And, it’s hard to read and implement.

With atomic design, a whole team of developers can work with the same coding patterns. It’s like creating a team gold standard.

When your whole team starts out by creating common parts to work from and compiling those, every step onward is easier.

If you need a specific atom, you just consult the list.

Say you need a “submit” button. You don’t have to go through all of the pages created previously to find it. Just consult the list of atoms.

An Inherent Style Guide

The work of creating a style guide disappears. As a team, you’ll essentially build a style guide as you build the list of atoms and molecules.

You won’t be forcing style decisions at the last minute. It will all be there before you’ve built anything.

See It All Before It’s Done

Diagrams will still be useful with atomic web design. In fact, they are essential in organizing your molecules and atoms.

Companies like Slickplan can help atomic web designers see all their modules and how they fit together. Once you diagram with your atoms and molecules, you can replace or delete any element.

Fewer Components

In more “by the seat of your pants” web design, the number of components goes up exponentially. But, if you create all of the components before building the website, you end up limiting the number.

This streamlines the process and creates a searchable database you can use over and over again.

Simplify Your Life

Organization and simplification are what increase productivity in web design. If you can adopt a design philosophy like atomic web design, you’ll increase the number of websites you can produce and reduce production time.

Site Transfer Update


Just a quick note that the transfer of Get Rich Slowly from its former owners back to me is progressing as expected. That means, of course, that there are hiccups. There always are.

One of those hiccups is being caused by me publishing new material while the site transfer is in progress. When I publish something new, it’s appearing on the old server. But that means we do a new database each time I publish an article, then upload it to the new server — along with all of the comments. Oops. And haha.

As a result, I’ll need to go radio silent for a few days. This is probably best anyhow since I’m still in Dallas for the financial conference. I don’t have a lot of time to write.

Have no fear, though. We’re diligently working behind the scenes to get the site transferred, to implement a temporary new design (I’ll commission a permanent new design soon), and so on. There’s lots of work being done on the site! But I won’t publish new articles until the site transfer is finished and we have everything working on the new server. Please be patient. (This is advice I need to give myself more than I need to give you…)

How to Sell Insurance from Your Couch


We’ve talked a lot on here about ways to disconnect from the conventional work lifestyle: how to become a digital nomad, how to leap headlong into affiliate marketing.

But there are ways to take what you already do and mobilize it.

When you think of insurance brokers, you think of people who sit in some office down the street. You don’t think of someone who does their work before they’ve showered for the day.

And yet the online work revolution is changing almost every sector of society. And the insurance market is facing an employment crisis.

This means employers will need to be relevant to a new world of employment. And they’re starting to turn to remote work as a fill for that gap.

And that’s where you come in. You can drop your 9-5 office job and go home…permanently. Let’s look at how that’s possible.

1. Why Insurance Companies Don’t Sell Directly Online

Why don’t insurance companies skip the middleman?

Every other sector of society sells directly through their own store. Why do insurance companies stick with such a dated sales model?

You literally have to call an insurance agent after you get an online quote. (Some of us are rebels and resort to email instead.)

It has everything to do with the 1 million insurance agents already out there today. Some of those agents have been working longer than HTTP has been around.

Firing all of those agents just wouldn’t look good.

Where is the Insurance World Today?

More middlemen. That’s what’s happening to facilitate the online push while still pleasing local insurance agents.

While these online middlemen would love to eventually sell insurance directly, they can’t. And they’re basically a glorified farmer’s market for insurance.

But fifty percent of consumers begin their insurance shopping on mobile devices and even more online. And that number is increasing.

The only fully online insurance company in the world is PolicyBazaar, and that’s the Indian market.

2. The Referral Game

Just like realtors, insurance agents rely on referrals. Referrals don’t always have to be personal, but they can be.

In essence, selling insurance isn’t much different than selling anything else online. You just have to have a physical location and a phone where people can reach you.

And the sales funnel approach will most likely be your go-to marketing tool to produce leads and referrals.

Build a Website

Websites for insurance brokers aren’t going to be much different than any other sales site. You will have a home page, a contact page, a blog, a sales page, etc.

But the two places you want to focus most of your efforts are your blog and your sales page. One draws in people the other is a landing page.

Your blog is your brand’s content. Do not make it into some personal blog. You’ll get nowhere.

Create or commission content that appeals to your market base. If you’re selling life insurance, who will your future customers be? If car insurance, what then?

Make your content readable, engaging and informative. These are NOT sales pages. Their main purpose is to drive traffic to your website where hopefully visitors click on links and become leads.

PPC

Your second area of effort on your website will be your landing pages. Unless your sales page is your home page, your home page won’t be your landing page.

You want people to land on the sales page or an informative blog article when they click a link to your website.

PPC (pay-per-click) marketing is simply online ad marketing. Companies like Google and Facebook pay websites to host ads. These ads charge the client each time someone clicks one.

The owners of a website get money, Google or Facebook get money, and you, the client, pay. But only when someone clicks.

This is a paid way of getting links to your website out in the wild and in front of interested eyes.

And you want those links to go directly to a landing page.

Email Marketing

The other half of your funnel should be email marketing. Email marketing is still relevant today.

And insurance quotes will most likely be your way into the email server of your visitors.

Here’s a secret, free quotes, whether by a service company or an insurance company, aren’t free. The cost isn’t immediate dollars. It’s information.

When someone offers a free quote, what do they ask for?

Email, phone, address, etc. Insurance is great because every applicant has to give way more than an email before they can receive their free quote.

If you’re selling home insurance, you get to dig into their home information. If you’re selling life insurance or car insurance a lot of personal information gets spilled.

You can use this information to your advantage. You now know exactly how to market to these people.

Most affiliate and web marketers would be jealous. But be sure you’re regulation compliant. What you can and cannot use for marketing is well regulated.

3. What If I’ve Never Sold Insurance?

Anyone can sell insurance as long as they have the proper licensing. Each state is different. Check with your state to find out requirements.

Most likely they’ll ask for a background check. They don’t want scammers and crooks selling insurance.

And you’ll have to learn all of the privacy regulations involved with insurance. Health insurance will most likely be the most regulated. You will have to follow The HIPPA rule and know it inside and out.

You’ll want to choose a specialty. There is every kind of insurance under the sun. You want to choose something that interests you.

If you don’t choose a field that interests you, every day will be a struggle, especially if you work from home. Money might be awesome, but you have to have one more motivation beyond it to survive the remote work life.

Conclusion: Persistence Pays Off

You will need resilience if you want to sell insurance on your own. But the hard work will pay off.

Learn to grow a thick skin. You’ll be rejected over and over again. But you’ll rejoice when someone buys your product.

Retirement Investing with the Bucket System


While I’m primarily an index fund investor — and at 48 years old still have 80% of my money in equities (my only bonds are “legacy” bonds) — I do like to read about other approaches to retirement investing. I’ve long been tempted by the Permanent Portfolio, for example.

The November 2017 issue of Kiplinger’s features suggested portfolios for five stages of life. Mostly I disagree with them, and I don’t like that the funds they promote are expensive. That said, I think their approach to retirement investing is interesting. On the surface, it’s the age-old “60% stocks/40% bonds portfolio”. What makes it interesting, however, is their reasoning behind this asset allocation.

The Bucket System

Kiplinger’s suggests that retirees can balance both risks using what they call a “bucket system”. Here’s how it works.

  • Divide your portfolio into three “buckets”. Each one serves a specific purpose.
  • The first bucket contains one year’s worth of living expenses. This money is in cash (or a cash equivalent). So, for instance, if you spend about $36,000 per year, then your first bucket might have $36,000 in a high-yield savings account.
  • Your second bucket contains enough money to cover expenses for nine years. For someone who spends $36,000 per year, this would be roughly $324,000. Kiplinger’s says this money should be invested in “high-quality bonds or a fixed annuity”. In reality, it should be in something smarter than cash but safer than stocks — whatever that means to you.
  • The final bucket contains the rest of your retirement savings, which turns out to be 60% of the entire portfolio. You want to invest this money in “stocks and other aggressive options”. (For me, this would include real estate.) Your aim is for this bucket to be continually growing.

Naturally, you keep your buckets at the suggested levels through regular rebalancing. From the article:

Replenish your buckets periodically by trimming top performers in your third bucket and by selling bond-fund shares as necessary to refill the cash bucket. If the market tanks, hold off on touching your stock funds until they recover, even if doing so means you draw down your second bucket for a few years to pay for living expenses.

Like I said, this is a traditional 60/40 asset allocation, but it’s explained in a manner that actually makes sense to me. It’s still too conservative for me, but I could see why other folks might choose this option.

Finding Balance

Although Kiplinger’s is pitching the bucket system as something for retirees, it’s an idea anybody could use. Depending on your age, goals, and circumstances, your buckets might be different sizes and contain different assets.

Also, Kiplinger’s notes that there’s a balance to be had.

  • If your retirement portfolio is heavily invested in stocks (as mine is), then you must understand that you’re taking on risk. If the market crashes, your portfolio value is going to plummet. People like me need to be okay with that. (I am.)
  • On the other hand, if you’re too cautious and move too much from stocks to bonds (or cash or gold), you’ll miss out on gains. Your portfolio might not even keep up with inflation!

As always, investing is a balancing act. You pursue higher returns while also hedging against potential problems. There’s no one right answer. You have to do what works for you and your situation.

But what makes Chrome so appealing? Is it customizability (Firefox has that)? Or security (Safari is probably more secure)?

I’d say it’s actually two things, connectivity (with everything Google) and secure plugins. These two things make Chrome shine brighter than the rest. And very little effort is needed to make it that way.

Page Analytics is essentially a snapshot tool for viewing your own site’s Google Analytics while continuing to browse. It’s real-time once you’re logged on.

You can see metrics like unique page views, bounce rate, and average time on page. You can completely skip the Google Analytics page with this one if you want. And for some people, that’s super important for productivity.

Redirect Path

If coding isn’t your thing, then don’t worry, Redirect Path will still be super useful.

Have you recently moved your website? Or do you suspect that a competitor has? You probably want to know if that link juice moved with it.

You also want to know if the redirects are working for your backlinks.

This is exactly what Redirect Path is for. It’s a Chrome plugin that will show you all the redirects from a URL you enter.

You can see detailed descriptions of each redirect. Things like server types, cookies, caching and the IP address.

And lastly, you can actually discover backlink opportunities by following the redirect chain to individual pages.

Keywords, Keywords Everywhere

Keywords Everywhere is one of the best tools out there for understanding the search queries of your target audience. And without tools like this, access to search volumes is quite difficult.

It may not be the best tool for the job. But it’s certainly quicker than pulling up all the research tools you use.

This plugin pulls data from three sources, Google Keyword Planner, UberSuggest, and Google Search Console. While the results are approximate (no keyword tool is perfect), it does give you a quick starting point for your keyword research.

Mozbar

What if you could bring the most popular SEO service on the internet directly to your browser plugin bar? That’s exactly what the Mozbar does.

If you want most of what Moz has to offer without directly accessing Moz, then you should download this plugin. It allows you to check a host of metrics while browsing the internet.

You’ll see some of the most important ones on there like domain authority, page authority, link profiles, keyword highlights and more.

2. Link Building and Technical SEO Chrome Plugins

Doing outreach for link building is a pain in the…well, you know. And if there were an easier way than reaching out through brute email lists, we’d all do it, right?

But the thing is, there are easier ways of handling this task. And SEO chrome plugins are one of those ways.

Outreach With Ninja Outreach Lite

Ninja Outreach reaches far and succeeds. They enjoy access to over 4 million influencers. That kind of data is rare.

And with the Ninja Outreach Lite, you can pretty much have semi-free access to that database.

If you need to find influencers, this is your plugin. You can find all the information you need to get you started. Info like Name, follower counts, location, backlinks, domain authority and more are all right there for the picking.

Large-Scale Analysis With Scraper

Sometimes you just need to pull a lot of data from several different websites at once. And doing this audit with just a spreadsheet, a few online tools, and your own two eyes will have you screaming by the end.

There’s a plugin for that.

It’s called Scraper. And while it’s a bit more complicated than the other plugins I’ve mentioned. It’s much easier than the manual method.

It uses XPath query language and exports HTML data from your pages. And it does this across the whole website.

User Agent Switcher

There once was a time where you only had to worry about desktop website usage. Accessing the internet from the palm of your hand was a text-only adventure.

Today, screens vary in size and interactivity. And you need to optimize your website to fit those media.

The User Agent Switcher allows you to see exactly how websites look and function on every device. And you can do this with just a desktop or laptop.

Fix The Broken With Link Miner

One of the most effective ways of taking ground with your link building campaign is broken link building. But doing it manually through research and email requests is time-consuming.

And the most time-consuming part is the searching. How do you even begin?

But Link Miner will trawl the internet for you, searching for broken links in your niche. It will not only find the broken links, but it will give you all the data you need about the links.

Conclusion: There Are More

Of course, I could write about more extensions. There a plenty out there just as useful.

The ChooseFI Podcast


Choose FIEarlier this year, I attended Camp Mustache Southeast in Gainesville, Florida. Among the many awesome people in attendance were Jonathan and Brad, two charming fellows with a passion for financial independence.

At the retreat, Brad told me a story that gave me warm fuzzies. In April 2011, I wrote an article at GRS about a British Airways travel card that offered 100,000 bonus miles when certain conditions were met. I was still a little wary of credit cards, but I decided to sign up. Brad read that article and decided to get the card too. “I got over $4000 in travel value out of that one card!” he told me. Now Brad runs a site called Travel Miles 101, which teaches families how to make the most of their credit cards.

Soon after that weekend north of Orlando, Brad and Jonathan decided to team up. They launched, Choose FI, a blog (and podcast) about designing the life you want, and about their experiments on the road to financial independence.

I’m pleased that this first-ever installment of Get Rich Slowly Theater (which I hope will be a regular Saturday column) features Brad and Jonathan’s latest episode from the Choose FI podcast. This particular episode is built around an interview with none other than yours truly, J.D. Roth.

During our hour-long conversation, we covered a wide range of topics. The guys asked me to recount my journey from debt to wealth. We talked about the importance of taking action, about trying to teach everyone how to be better with money, and about the current state of the financial independence community.

Other highlights include:

  • I tell one of my favorite stories: How I chose my first bank account because it came with a free Frisbee. I used the Frisbee only for an afternoon, but I kept the bank account — and the monthly fee that came with it — for nearly seventeen years. That “free” Frisbee wasn’t free. In the end, it cost me nearly $1500!
  • I also talk about how I attended college on scholarship, and how I made that happen. The secret? I worked hard in high school, I was involved in lots of activities, and I tested well. I should have mentioned Ramit Sethi’s excellent guide to getting college scholarships, but it didn’t occur to me during the interview.
  • We discuss optimization vs. what works. In the world of personal finance, there’s usually more than one way to accomplish any given task. Some methods are more efficient than others. It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that if you don’t take the optimal path to your goal — buying a house, getting out of debt, retiring early — then you’re not doing it right. I think that’s bullshit. The right way to do something is the way that works for you, the method that actually allows you to accomplish whatever it is you’re after. “Suboptimal and following through is infinitely better than perfect optimization where you bail out,” Jonathan says, and he’s right.

I listened to this podcast again this morning while walking my dog, and I was pleased. Transfer Underway — Please Standby


Hey, money nerds. Just a quick note that we’ve initiated some of the behind the scenes stuff to transfer control of Get Rich Slowly from the current owners to me. No big deal really except that there’s like to be some downtime during the next few hours…or days…or even weeks.

First up, we’re transferring control of the domain. Shouldn’t REALLY be an issue — unless it is. That is to say, nothing usually goes wrong with this except that for a few hours you might not be able to reach the site. But because the new site isn’t yet set up, there could be some downtime. Maybe even for a couple of days.

After that, we’ll transfer the datafiles containing 11-1/2 years of Get Rich Slowly to their new home. Then we’ll point to the internet to this new home.

Really, it’s not rocket surgery. But you never know with stuff like this. Things can and do go wrong.

Bottom line: Be patient. We’ll get things up and running ASAP! By early November, GRS should be at its new home, and everything should be going smoothly.

Why No One Cares About Your Personal Brand


You’ve become the expert. You’re sharing your expertise daily. But you’re seeing few bumps in your traffic or your followers.

What’s going on?

You rode the momentum just fine until now. And then the light at the end of the tunnel revealed itself to be a brightly painted wall.

There must be something you’re missing, right? Or should you just quit and go back to your day job because you’re never going to accelerate again?

Fortunately, this plateau you hit could be temporary. That is, it could be temporary if you put effort into all the right places.

1. You’re Not Making New Friends

A personal brand is all about relationships. And while you can’t be “friends” with all your followers and all your clients, you can make new friends and be personable.

If you’re hard-selling your brand, you’re not going to make new friends. It’s ok to ask followers to opt-in to stuff. But if that’s all you’re asking for, you’re going to lose those people.

Why?

Well, imagine a personal relationship that functions like that. What if you were married? All you do is ask your spouse to do or buy stuff for you.

There’s no conversation. There’s no intimacy. There’s no friendship.

How long do you think that relationship would last? And if you were single, do you think someone would date you?

Before you ask someone to opt-in to things, you have to establish a relationship. This includes creating dialogues with brand followers and ensuring their voices are heard.

2. I Find Your Lack of Faith Disturbing

Do you have faith in yourself? If not, how did you build a personal brand in the first place?

To become powerful and attractive, you must have confidence in your brand and in yourself. This means being authentic.

But there’s a difference between being candid and being authentic. Your personal brand is one part you and three parts fiction.

Why? Because your brand should be tailored to your audience. The authenticity doesn’t involve a revelation about yourself. It involves a revelation about your followers.

They’ve come to gain something. Whether that be insight or information or a service, they’ve not come to dig into your underwear drawer.

Displaying your weaknesses will only detract from your personal brand.

3. Time Is Of the Essence

When you share your content is important. And if you’re not managing your time well, you’re not going to hit your deadlines.

Is it really as simple as that? You bet your bottom dollar it is!

But what does it mean to manage your time well when promoting your personal brand? It means learning to outsource your small tasks.

Tim Ferris uses an antelope vs mice analogy for this.

If you were a lion, would you chase a mouse for sustenance or an antelope? The mouse isn’t worth it. But the antelope, although harder to catch, is higher in calories and could feed the lion for a while.

Ferris applies this to the tasks he has to do in a day. He asks himself, which of these will return the highest yield, and he attempts to outsource the rest.

If you’re missing content deadlines daily, you might be chasing mice.

One key thing you should outsource is your social media posting. While over time, this might yield great results, the actual formatting and posting of your social content is a very small task.

Use a program like Buffer to schedule your social media posts. You won’t have to even set reminders for yourself. And you’ll spend time on more important things.

Sometimes it’s all a matter of re-branding. But you’ve built your brand from the ground up. While this might be an antelope thing, it’s a bigger antelope than you can handle.

Companies like Graphic Evidence could look at your brand and help you retool it.

4. Originality is a Pair of Fresh Eyes

While there isn’t really anything new under the sun, it’s all in how you re-arrange things. But if you’ve hit a plateau in your personal brand, it might be something to do with your droll content.

Are you producing something fresh, or are you just regurgitating?

That last noun should really make you gag. Why? Because it’s making your followers gag.

If you’re producing the same content over and over again, I’m sorry, but you’re just going nowhere. But doing something “new” doesn’t necessarily mean leaving your niche.

You just have to look at your niche with a new pair of eyes.

That’s essentially the gist of originality. Most things that are considered original are merely a rearrangement of other people’s ideas. Of course, what makes your content truly yours is your perspective.

How do you look at your niche with a new pair of eyes?

Stay Up to Date

Trending content within your niche will bring a fresh feel to your content. What’s being shared the most? Who’s being talked about the most?

Gather up as much trending news and as many fresh ideas as you can and share those things.

Ask Questions

Ask questions and then answer them. Better yet, have your audience ask questions. Do an AMA either on your own platforms or on Reddit.com

If your content is getting stale, questions will open up new doorways and uncover ideas you never knew you had.

Always Gather Ideas

I carry a tiny Moleskine notebook in my pocket. When an idea for an article or a story plot comes to mind, I jot it down.

Even if I’m busy, I try to take a second to jot down my idea and not let it slip away. This is when the creative mind typically thrives.

And if you’re struggling to keep your content fresh, you’re probably letting thoughts go unrecorded. Because the potential in your brain for originality is greater than you think.

Take Time to Brainstorm

If nothing comes to you in the odd moments, then maybe structured brainstorming will help. Some people need structure to jump-start their brain and their creativity.

And if that fails, you could always start networking to see what other people in your niche are thinking. Sometimes just having someone to bounce ideas off of will boost your creativity.

Conclusion: Don’t Be Afraid

We make most of our decisions based on fear. But life really shouldn’t be this way.

If you’re emotionally intelligent, you’ll make your personal brand decisions based on certainty. Be bold and make a stand with your personal brand.
