Google’s Top Algorithm Updates Explained in 5 Minutes


It would be impossible for me to explain how Google’s algorithm worked. I’m not a software engineer at Google. Google keeps a tight lid on the inner workings of the most powerful and popular search engine in the world.

But for a while there, Google announced every major update to their search engine. These update announcements told webmasters and SEOs exactly what in the world wide web each update affected.

Now, Google is largely silent on their updates.

If you look at Moz’s Google Update page, everything from Early October 2016 is labeled “Unnamed Major Update.” And Google is keeping us in the dark on purpose.

If you want to understand where Google is now, you have to understand where it’s been. I’m going to take you through some of the major changes we’ve seen over the last few years.

1. It All Began With the Panda

Before the Panda arrived, all was quiet on the Google front. We were all munching our keywords politely while other people were dumping low-quality trash into the top ranking search spots.

It’s the low-quality and thin content trash from “content farms” that angered the Panda. The Panda rampaged through Google for the first time in February 2011. And suddenly a whole lot of people saw their site traffic drop enormously.

This changed content strategy completely.

It also changed how we approach SEO. Keyword research and even link-building since linking to poor quality websites no longer boosted your SERPs.

The first update affected about 12% of all U.S. searches. Which is a large number considering how many people actually use Google.

SEOs and webmasters became accustomed to the new updates. The percentage of affected sites dropped each time the Panda rampaged through Google.

“Updates” in Google aren’t a one-time deal. A “major update” is essentially a new filter that runs periodically and adapts to the way people are searching.

The Panda rampages about every couple months. And there are even little Pandas that tweak things in between sometimes.

2. Then the Penguin Waddled

While the Panda did affect link-building somewhat, it’s the Penguin that did the most “damage.”

Before the Penguin waddled all over the link-building scene, everyone did link-building differently. There were hundreds of link schemes geared toward manipulating search engines into ranking your content higher.

The Penguin totally destroyed all hope of ever using most of the schemes ever again. Anyone who used link-schemes saw their website tank right after the Penguin update.

If the Penguin went to your site and saw too many keywords, it pulled the trigger. Before the Penguin update, Google used keywords to find content for the user.

Keywords still help Google determine content useful for each user. The Penguin update ensured that this wasn’t the only metric Google used to rank content. And it penalized anyone who tried to stuff keywords to force Google to rank them higher.

The Penguin Can’t Stand Over-Optimization

In general, SEO is good. It directs traffic to high-quality sites and gives the little guy a chance. But sometimes SEOs can get a little overzealous.

This is why keyword stuffing happened. It’s also why Penguin penalizes a lot of things.

Take anchor text for example. Before the Penguin Update, if you wanted to optimize (over-optimize) your anchor texts for internal links, you would place a major keyword with a URL that had the keyword.

Now, if you try to use that method now, Penguin will find out. And you don’t want the Penguin to find out. It’s not pretty.

3. And The Hummingbird Flitted Free

The Panda and Penguin were just updates to an old algorithm. They weren’t anything revolutionary for Google.

But when the Hummingbird came along, everyone in the Google jungle paid attention. Why? Because The Hummingbird was a completely new search algorithm.

The Hummingbird weaved a whole new nest for searches in 2013. How did it change the way we search? It introduced a search for meaning.

Not the meaning of life, sorry, (although I’d argue it’s 42.) The meaning of each search.

Before the Hummingbird flitted in, Google would only take into account specific words and match them together. But with Hummingbird, you can have two search queries that are similar but not exactly the same on a page.

This creates a faster search engine. How? By giving users a broader base of information from their single query. And it more accurately displays results.

The Hummingbird update utilizes some 200 ranking factors. And keywords are further down the list than ever before.

How To Contend With The Hummingbird

The eternal question in SEO is “how do I keep up with Google?” For the Hummingbird update, you simply change what question you ask.

Instead of “how do I rank for this query?” it should be “how do I answer this question well?”

You focus should be on your audience or potential leads. How do you answer their questions? How do you give them what they need (or want)?

That’s how you please the Hummingbird. And really, that’s a lot more simple than attempting to rank (which we still try to do #noshame).

4. But They Didn’t See the Pigeon Arriving

Whether you agree with globalization or not, local commerce is still where a lot of the money is at. And Google realized they needed to improve their local search back in 2014.

So, they released the Pigeon.

And it flew wingman for the Hummingbird. Why? Because it too emphasized the meaning of a search query over mere words.

If you searched for “The Best Dive Bars in Jersey” and then searched “Jersey Dive Bars,” you would get the same results.

Local SEO changed when the Pigeon arrived. And SEO companies like LocalWeb SEO had to adapt.

How? Well, the Pigeon also brought along Google Maps. And “local” suddenly had to mean Local.

If you’re not running a VPN and telling Google you’re in Russia, then you shouldn’t have to type a location when looking for the local Hookah bar. And with Hummingbird, this was suddenly a non-issue for searchers.

Conclusion: Google Still Tinkering

Although Google isn’t officially announcing their algorithm updates, it’s apparent they’re still tinkering under the hood.

SEOs have seen a few unconfirmed updates over the last year. The most major of those they’ve named Fred.

Fred seems to target sites that emphasize revenue over quality content. But this is unconfirmed by anyone in the know at Google.

Can You Spot an Affiliate Marketing Scam?


Scammers are everywhere even in markets you thought were safe. And scams are costly too. So far this year, Americans have lost at least $16 billion to scammers.

While you may not lose a billion dollars in an affiliate marketing scam, any money and time lost to scammers should infuriate you. But what can you do about it?

First, you must learn to recognize an affiliate marketing scam when you see one. The black hats in our midst need to be exposed for the safety of us all.

That’s why I’ve put a little bit of work into doing exactly that; exposing their methods. So if you would like to stay safe out there, check out my list below.

1. The Pay to Play Scheme

So, you wanna be an affiliate marketer, huh? Well, according to some…cough…scammers…cough, you must pay to become one.

These pay to play scammers hope you don’t understand how affiliate marketing works. The money is supposed to trickle downward, ya know, like water?

If it’s going upward, that some pretty nicked up magic if you ask me. Run away! Run away!

Affiliate marketing works like this: you put in the work to gain an audience. Each time someone buys something from your affiliate through your site or channel, you get a commission.

It’s cheap advertising for the company providing the affiliation. They are essentially “hiring” you to amplify their reach.

Do you have to pay your employer to be an employee? If you do, I’d seriously question why you’re at that job.

Your suspicions should be the same when approaching an affiliate program that charges you to be an affiliate. Charging to become an affiliate is double dipping. They’re making money off your work twice. Not cool.

2. The Promised Payment Scheme

As a freelance writer, I have to watch out for this one as well.

The promised payment scheme works like this: the affiliate promises to pay you commission….later. There is no contracted time period.

Sometimes, it’s not even a scam by the textbook definition. Some legitimate companies don’t even think about payment timelines and you have to hound them for the money.

Other times, a business legitimately goes out of business.

But other times, companies do this on purpose so they don’t have to pay. They’ll sell enough through you to make a profit, say some magic words, and disappear forever.

You can protect yourself from all of the above by demanding a pay period up front. Large affiliates like Amazon already have an automatic payment system. Others might send you a check monthly or biweekly.

Don’t let an affiliate program get away with not paying you. And protect yourself by checking a company’s track record. Make sure their business model is solid and they’re predicted to thrive.

3. The Phony Courses Scheme

Great advice doesn’t come cheap. And there are plenty of great sources out there (like this digital strategy blog) that practically give away valuable information.

And while there are some well done and useful courses and training materials out there for affiliate marketers, there are a small number of phony ones as well.

What do these phony courses look like? Very similar to legitimate ones, unfortunately.

But, they do have that phony smell.

Don’t believe anything that says you can become rich without putting any work in. Affiliate marketing takes effort and time.

Any eBook, video course, DVD course, webinar, or seminar that tries to sell you a get rich quick scheme is lying. Don’t feed them. They deserve to starve and shrivel and live in a van down by the riverside.

And if you do feed them, they will run away with your money. You’ll never see them or your money again.

4. Get My Book Free…Just Pay Shipping!

I tried to start a business once selling used books on Amazon. I sold most of my books for less than a dollar. Why? Because book rate shipping was less than Amazon gave me for shipping.

I made money on the shipping fee and not the book. Suffice it to say, I was young and stupid and that venture didn’t last.

But the lesson I learned helped me spot this scam from a mile away.

If you see a “Get this book free, just pay for the shipping” offer, don’t bite no matter how tempting. Not only are they actually charging you for the book through their outrageous shipping fee, you’re not gonna get what you paid for.

You’re most likely going to receive marketing materials rather than useful information. And even if they do send you something moderately useful, they’re using you to bolster their book sales numbers.

Why would they do that? Simple, they want top seller status with whatever publisher they use.

This is pretty much similar to the “pay to play” scheme. You shouldn’t have to pay to boost someone’s brand. And you certainly shouldn’t fall for the “free but with shipping” scam either.

5. Unknowingly Becoming the Scammer

Fake products are fascinating. Some of these scammers really do put a lot of work and imagination into their scams.

Take the Chinese traffic straddling bus for example. The whole Chinese government got jipped by these fools who sold an engineering impossibility as something plausible.

Sometimes I wonder what these people could do for the world if they put their imaginations to good use.

But affiliate marketing scams aren’t nearly as glaring as a traffic straddling bus. Sometimes an affiliate program might look legit and be completely fake.

Just like the guy on the street in D.C. selling Fauxkleys (fake Oakleys), some scammers will pretend to be big name affiliate programs and then steal from your audience.

Often, they will even be the “Pay to Play” types as well. But you will quickly see that nothing good comes of these estranged pyramid schemes. You’ll make very little money and have wasted all of your precious time and possibly lose your audience to boot.

Conclusion: Be Vigilant

Most of the time, common sense will protect you from these scammers. You just have to be vigilant and do your due diligence.

But even the best of us fall for scams sometimes (PM me if you want to hear about my experience with scammers at a carnival). But you’ll lessen your chances of getting dupped if you keep your eyes open and are wise.

5 Reasons You May Not Want to Use WordPress on Your Next Site


When you look at the internet as a whole and the websites that are active and creating content today, WordPress is completely dominating every other CMS platform out there. However, just because everyone is using WordPress it doesn’t mean it’s the best platform for running every website you create.

For example, if you were to create a single page website that was just going to be used for an online resume or profile, you likely wouldn’t need to have a complete install of WordPress to create something worthwhile. Just like in the early days of the internet, websites were built out of HTML and very static in design. For the most part, these types of websites are still being used and are quite effective today — which also don’t require any databases, programming or Advanced WordPress themes.

5 Reasons WordPress Might Not Be the Best Option for Your Next Site

As much as I love WordPress and use it on nearly all of my sites, today we are going to look at a few different examples of when WordPress likely isn’t required. A perfect example of this can be seen in one of my case studies where I created a social media resource site that went on to generate a million dollars in profit, yet it was made of pure HTML pages and not a single lineup programming. Granted, this was years ago and the internet was a lot more simple then, but you get the point… you don’t need WordPress to create something amazing.

WordPress Might Be Overkill for New Users

As simple as WordPress might be to install and use for many of us, for new site owners and bloggers this can be quite a complicated task. Even with one click installation from many web hosting companies, many people might quickly be turned off once they log into WordPress and see so many options available for them. It doesn’t take much to discourage someone when they are first starting out. One complaint that we often see in reference to WordPress and why people didn’t find success with blogging or even get their site live is that they simply didn’t know where or how to get started.

Whether WordPress is seen as a platform that can be seen as too overwhelming for users, or simply too much for a basic site, the question always seems to be a hot topic on Quora, with many experts leaving their own feedback and advice.

WordPress isn’t for Everyone

As I mentioned earlier, WordPress is amazing for someone who wants to create a content-heavy site with a lot of options. However, for most people this might not be the case. That is why there is still such a demand for drag-and-drop website builders that allow people to go live with their sites in just minutes versus having to install software and using a platform they are going to have to learn.

One such example of this is Duda, which not only focuses on making the process of site creation easy but also on site performance and monetization as well. Another interesting thing about the platform is that they’ve made an effort to go after the WordPress audience and show why they are considered a better solution. With built-in marketing tools, SSL set up with every website and dedicated customer support, it’s these type of premium services that can pull existing users away from WordPress. In comparison to WordPress and other site builders, Duda has also made a big focus on page speed, which can show 70% longer sessions on a website, 35% lower bounce rates and 60% more pageviews being delivered.

This same business model is working extremely well for many site builder based companies. Unless you are a “site owner” and really want to work on your site and creating content, WordPress likely isn’t even on the minds of the average person creating a site.

WordPress is Free… in the Beginning

At its core, WordPress is free. It’s free to download, it’s free to create content and it’s even free to download some plugins and WordPress themes from their website. However, if you want to create a professional WordPress site and have it become a money maker or generate a lot of traffic there is a lot of work, time, effort, and money that will likely have to go into it.

A quick example of this would be to upgrade to a premium WordPress theme or even a custom theme. This in itself will likely cost at least $100 and could scale into the thousands if you went with a custom design. For new WordPress users this usually isn’t something they think about but as the explorer into more options, this is where many unexpected costs will come in to rise.

At the same time, it’s also important to note that WordPress.org is free to download and use, but you are still going to need a domain name and web hosting to use the software. WordPress.com is another option, but I wouldn’t recommend anyone go with a free blogging platform, as users will be very limited in what they can do with their site, how they create content and also won’t have complete ownership of their site.

WordPress has Open Vulnerabilities

Whenever you build a website with software there is always the potential for holes, leaks, and openings for hackers and bots to make their way in. This is especially true when using a platform like WordPress which uses WordPress themes and plugins that might need to be updated every time a new version or issue comes to rise. While this is true with most website builders and CMS platforms, it’s not something you will often see with a flat HTML website or one that is hosted through a drag-and-drop solution. Again, just another potential headache for someone that is only going to create a simple website.

To further back up these statements and the possible vulnerabilities within WordPress, we can reference these statistics from Wordfence:

  • There are currently a total of 37,300 plugins available in theWordPress.org repository
  • 17,383 of those plugins have not been updated in the past 2 years.
  • 13,655 plugins have a compatibility tag of 3.x. WordPress 4.0 was released in September 2014.
  • 3,990 plugins have not been updated since 2010 which is over 7 years ago.
  • There are 29,892 additional WordPress plugins in the plugin source code repository that are not listed in WordPress.org in the plugin directory.

Unless you are actively using and updating your WordPress site, it might not be the safest option for your brand or business in the long run.

Which Site Builder or CMS is Best for Your Site?

Before going live with your next website, take a few moments to think about how you would like to create it and what you would like it to turn into in the months to come. If it’s a simple website and one that you are not going to update often, then you likely don’t need to use WordPress.

You’re Probably Doing Your Newsletter All Wrong, Here’s Why


My generation grew up with email. We remember passing along chain-letters hoping to see it return with a million names.

And we haven’t given up on email like many outside the Millenial generation might assume. So neither should you.

I’ll open an email newsletter if the title catches my eye. And I’ve signed up for probably hundreds…mostly connected to giveaways (still waiting to win something).

But a majority of those newsletters don’t even get a glance. Sometimes it’s not the marketer’s fault. I’ve not bothered to cancel a good chunk of the newsletters I subscribe to.

But there are times when I say “What the…?” when I read a newsletter title. These are the moments I want to speak into. The failed moments where marketers think they’re clever when they’re clearly not.

So, scroll onward and we’ll talk about how you can avoid some nasty email newsletter mistakes.

1. You Assume Everyone is a Clone

In the film Multiplicity, Micheal Keaton’s character takes an offer to clone himself. And in this film, the cloning process is more like a carbon copier or a 3D printing process. No need to wait thirty years for your clone to look like you.

But while Keaton’s clones all look like him, they all develop distinct personalities and hillarious conflict ensues.

What’s the lesson here? That even clones aren’t all the same person.

Remember this when creating e-mail newsletters. While your customers might have similar interests, not everyone is the same. Your most loyal customers are loyal for reasons your marginal customers are not.

If you try to appeal to everyone, your e-mail newsletter won’t be specific enough to capture your central audience.

Instead, target your most loyal. Those who come back again and again.

How do you specifically do this? Email tools.

Do a little shopping. The news@me email marketing tool is a great example of how you can separate out your email newsletters to target specific audiences. These tools will give both you and your readers a sense of autonomy and control.

2. Your Newsletter Makes You Seem Like as Slob

Is your desk messy or impeccable? Don’t answer that. It doesn’t really matter.

What matters is that your newsletter doesn’t look like a mad professor’s desk. Even if you can’t find a darned thing on your own desk, your customers expect to find something, anything, in your email newsletter.

But why do even the most organized people seem to have the least organized email newsletter? They don’t understand formatting.

Formatting will be your salvation when it comes to your newsletters. Why does formatting matter? Scannability.

The biggest mistake email marketers make: the wall of text.

A wall of text is virtually that. A wall filled with text.

In a wall of text, you will find no paragraphs, no headers, and certainly no pictures or graphics. It’s worse than reading a newspaper from 1865.

If one of your customers clicks on an email with a wall of text, don’t expect them to click again.

Instead, create white space.

Short sentences are O.K. And short paragraphs. You aren’t writing a book or even a letter to grandma. You want the newsletter to point at content on your actual website, not copy it.

And don’t forget pictures and graphics. It’s imperative you place them correctly.

Where should you place them? Typically above a header or next to a link.

And don’t overload your email with photos and graphics. Just as a wall of text will stave off the client, so will a college. This isn’t your 5th grade art project.

3. Your Email is Immobile

Yeah, I’m using the word immobile liberally. But most of us don’t check our email on a desktop computer or laptop anymore. We’re very mobile-centric.

And if people have to pinch and squint to even read the content in your emails, you’ve failed at the email marketing game.

While everyone knows your website needs to be mobile friendly, hardly anyone thinks about email. Responsive design isn’t just for the webmaster or the web designer. It’s for everyone.

You want every link to be clickable with a thumb. You want your text to be readable and exciting. And lastly, you want your message to be clear and concise.

4. The Font From Hell

There once was a time when fonts were something the office social coordinator used to blind the poor unfortunate souls who opened their email.

Usually, they would employ such fonts as Comic Sans and WingDings. And these were typically accompanied by rad colors such as neon green, pink, yellow, what have you.

Thanks to generous the typeface designers of the 21st century, there is no excuse for this idiocy. You can find some incredible and useful fonts for free on the internet.

And if you want colored backgrounds, you don’t have to rely on the colors in Microsoft Outlook.

5. Title Branding That Says Nothing

If I can’t tell what the email has in store from just glancing at the title, I won’t open it. And if the title doesn’t entice me, I don’t have time, sorry.

You have to demand and appeal with just one title. And that’s hard to do.

But the secret is in the brand. Remember the lessons you’ve learned about branding. Consistency, originality, and representation.

Your loyal customers subscribed to your email newsletter for a reason. You offer something of interest. And if your newsletter titles don’t include that original hook, nobody will open your email.

The second stage of email newsletter appeal can be found at the top of the email. It must immediately introduce what the letter is all about.

You can do this by including a consistent logo placement and using a consistent color scheme. And include products or content that’s central to your brand.

Everything should center around your brand or your content. Anything else is a distraction.

Conclusion: It’s Easier Than it Looks

Email newsletters aren’t rocket science. If you can organize your email content well and hook the reader from the moment they read the title, you’re golden.

Don’t forget that not all fonts are created equal, that you should create scannable content, and that it’s all about branding consistency.

Alexander Bachmann: powerful strong leadership that drives admitad success


In my 15 years of affiliate marketing I have known many top affiliates that had a “hot moment”.  People that have made up to 7 figures a month. Marketing plans are like stir fry. If you toss everything in a wok, set your burner to high, and then walk away, you’ll end up with burnt food.

But a lot of people treat marketing plans like this. They’d like to think all they have to do is throw the ingredients in, add water, and press a button.

This could be the most disastrous thing you could do to your marketing efforts. You’re likely to lose sight of your goals and end up in the weeds.

Instead, you need to treat your marketing plan like a living document. Something like the Constitution of the United States of America. It should be flexible and continually present for guidance.

But how do you keep your marketing plan fresh? How can you keep it ever-present for both yourself and your team?

1. Write Your Marketing Plan On Your Forehead

Ok. You probably don’t want to literally write it on your forehead.

But ancient literature used the images of writing something on your forehead or on the back of your hand as a metaphor for never forgetting.

You aren’t likely to memorize your marketing plan verbatim. But, if you’re like most small businesses, you might forget your marketing plan amid everything else you’re doing.

You may not even have a dedicated marketing team. Your team might know a thing or two about marketing, but maybe nobody is specifically in charge of marketing.

That’s ok. But you should still hold marketing meetings regularly to keep your plan on track and make sure someone on your team is making efforts toward your goals.

Forgetting your marketing plan is akin to forgetting where you were heading on a road trip. You might end up in the middle of nowhere where the hills have eyes…no bueno.

2. Don’t Write Your Marketing Plan On Tablets of Stone

Stone is a pretty good medium if you want something permanent. But your marketing plan isn’t permanent.

Marketing plans should be as alive and ever-changing as the seasons. Why? Because the marketing scene changes every day.

And it’s absolutely possible to keep up with your marketing goals daily. Analytics software can run in real time making marketing management simple.

If you see that your goals aren’t being met, simply change your methods. If you find that your goals are unrealistic, you can dial them back at any time.

Remember, hindsight is always 20/20. And while most people only remember this in hindsight, it’s best to keep in mind continually. Always look back before looking forward.

3. Write Your Plan Like A Roadmap, Not a List Or a Novel

If you want to make sure your plan stays fresh and malleable, do not write a whole novel about it. Or even make a list.

These things, like the massive tombs that contain them, gather dust and encourage stale behavior.

Instead, work out a timeline or a road map to success. Give your plan visual space. And like a road trip, you can stop off along the way or reroute when you want.

If you write out all the strategic steps or thinking, you’ll likely go into task mode.

Task mode is another name for tunnel vision. If you’re solely focused on “getting it done” you lose sight of the big picture while honing in on your originally perceived target.

You’ll be so driven to hit your goals and check things off from your list that you’ll forget to stop and look around at all the blooming data.

One other problem with a prose-heavy plan or a long list: nobody will read the thing. Who has time for that? Do you?

This ties into point one: if you want to keep the plan continually in your mind, don’t make it cumbersome.

It should be easy to remember and not so complex that you don’t know where to start if you wanted to change it.

If you make it too complex or too hard to remember, what happens when you send it to your team to review or you ask them to implement specific sections?

Don’t waste your team’s valuable time. They’re not going to appreciate it and it will slow your team’s progress in other areas.

Instead, keep it simple and trust your team to fill in the blanks. And besides, questions should always be allowed. Your team should be comfortable asking about the document and even poking holes in your plan.

4. Social Media Demands Flexibility

If you think social media marketing is the same as it was ten years ago, you must have a pretty short memory. The social media landscape doesn’t look at all like it did a decade ago.

In fact, what started out as an industry of two companies (Facebook and LinkedIn) has grown to a battlefield with a dozen armies vying for space. And social media changes every day.

So, how do you expect a static marketing plan to keep up with a social media campaign? I’ll tell you: you shouldn’t expect it to keep up with it. It just can’t.

If you’re doing PPC, you might end up paying for nothing if you’re not paying attention and modifying your plan. You might also end up with an audience that doesn’t care or an audience that’s even fake, resulting in zero outcomes.

The lesson here is simple. Don’t.

Don’t make your plan a novel. Don’t set it and forget it. And don’t set it in stone.
